Why Heat Isn’t Your Friend Silky bone straight hair may look appeasing to the naked eye however, there is more to it then meets the eye. Afro- textured hair tends to be dryer and more prone to damage more than any other race so, it is imperative that you are very aware of the consequences of using heat on your hair to often. The reason why Afro- textured hair tends to break easier is due to the
curl pattern. Coily curly hair has a very small amount of cuticle layers so, it provides very little protection against heat. When heat touches your hair the cuticles of the hair shaft it expands the cuticle making it become brittle even though it may appear to look shiny and healthy. After many sessions of squeezing flat irons or curling irons up and down the strands of your hair the pressure of straightening your hair breaks down the fibers of the cuticles causing them to become weak and damaged. When Afro- textured hair is flat ironed to often it can lead to split ends, heat damage, and dryness therefore, flat ironing, blow drying, and curling should be limited to 1-2 times a month with a few rules set in place.1. Extreme Deep Down Conditioning At Home Deep conditioning using heat really helps to benefit hair by soften the hair, smoothing the cuticle, and minimizing frizz. Heat helps to lock in moisture from water. Deep conditioning the proper way with the right products will help to smooth the cuticle of your hair reducing the feel of dryness and brittle tresses. The best way to deep condition your hair will be to section your hair in four sections and use the product from root to tip. Gently comb through hair for even distribution for optimum results. For extreme conditioning, cover hair with plastic cap and place a hooded dryer or thermal spa conditioning heating cap on your hair for 20-25 minutes. If you don’t own a conditioning heating cap or hooded dryer simply use a medium wet towel and put it in the dryer for a couple of minutes and wrap your hair with it after it has cooled down enough for you touch it. Deep conditioning treatments do not totally repair damage but, they can be used weekly as a preventive measurement. Try adding oils like olive oil, coconut oil, or avocado oil to your deep conditioner to infuse your hair with added moisture.
